Cobourg is marking Peace Officers Memorial Day today by remembering Constable Chris Garrett, who was killed in the line of duty while serving the community more than two decades ago.
Constable Garrett died on May 15, 2004 while protecting residents in Cobourg, and his sacrifice continues to be honoured each year throughout the community.
Residents are being encouraged to visit the Chris Garrett Memorial Park located along Birchwood Trail in Cobourg, where the public can reflect on his life, service and dedication to the community.
The park is home to “Hero’s Flight,” a memorial sculpture created by Canadian sculptor Gerald Gladstone in honour of Garrett.
Cobourg police noted this year also marks the completion of restoration work at the memorial site coordinated by Town of Cobourg staff and SubZero Blasting Incorporated.
Peace Officers Memorial Day is recognized internationally as a time to honour police officers and peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Constable Garrett’s death had a profound impact on Cobourg and policing communities across Ontario, and memorial tributes in his honour continue to serve as reminders of the risks officers face while serving the public.
Additional information about Constable Chris Garrett and his legacy is available through the Cobourg Police Service website.
