Port Hope Fire Chief Jason Williams has been named the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officers Association’s 2026 Fire Chief of the Year, recognizing more than two decades of leadership in emergency services, fire prevention, investigations, and public safety.
The award was presented Wednesday evening and highlights Williams’ work as Director of Fire and Emergency Services and Fire Chief for the Municipality of Port Hope.
Municipal officials say Williams has helped position Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services as a progressive, prevention focused department emphasizing public education, operational readiness, firefighter wellness, and community engagement.
In a statement following the announcement, Williams said the recognition reflects the professionalism and dedication of the many firefighters, fire prevention staff, and community partners working to keep Port Hope residents safe.
Under Williams’ leadership, the department has introduced several initiatives aimed at improving both prevention and response capacity.
Those efforts include distributing nearly 200 smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Safe Community Project Zero, expanding firefighter health and safety measures through station upgrades and contamination reduction practices, and introducing advanced equipment including thermal imaging and LUNAR technology.
The department also launched a Fire Suppression Day Crew Program designed to improve daytime emergency response and increase community outreach efforts.
Williams has additionally led development of a Wildland Fire Management Plan focused on wildfire preparedness and protection of natural areas including the Ganaraska Forest.
Before joining Port Hope, Williams worked with Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal as a Fire Investigator and Supervisor, supporting fire departments across the province through investigations, training, and regulatory compliance work.
Mayor Olena Hankivsky congratulated Williams on the award, calling it recognition of his commitment to innovation, leadership, and public safety in Port Hope.
