The new owner of the Cobourg Cougars says restoring strong community connections will be one of the organization’s top priorities as preparations begin for the 2026-27 Ontario Junior Hockey League season.
On May 29, the OJHL approved a franchise transaction that will see the Haliburton County Huskies relocate to Cobourg as the Cougars, while the existing Cougars franchise moves to Toronto and becomes the Warriors.
For Ryan Ramsey, the opportunity to take over hockey operations in Cobourg was one he couldn’t ignore.
Ramsey said the support shown by local fans over many years helped make Cobourg one of the league’s most respected markets.
While building a competitive team remains a priority, Ramsey says community involvement will be equally important.
Ramsey said the organization plans to work closely with minor hockey, community groups and local events throughout Northumberland.
One of the first tasks facing the new ownership group will be reconnecting with former volunteers, sponsors and supporters.
Free agency opens this Monday, June 1, with Ramsey saying player recruitment, staffing decisions and rebuilding community relationships will all be immediate priorities as the new era of Cougars hockey begins in Cobourg.
