Port Hope police are investigating a serious collision involving a commercial transport truck and a railway bridge that has forced the closure of a section of Hamilton Road.
According to police, the crash occurred Saturday, June 13, at approximately 10:23 a.m. on Hamilton Road.
Preliminary information indicates a southbound container truck struck the underside of a railway bridge after rear-mounted equipment on the vehicle remained in an elevated position.
Police say the impact caused the truck to stop abruptly and pivot upward. The cab then struck the bridge, sustaining significant damage before returning to the roadway.
Police, fire and emergency medical services responded to the scene and secured the area while investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
As a precaution, railway operations in the area were temporarily assessed following the incident.
Authorities report the bridge sustained structural damage, including displaced concrete and exposed reinforcing steel. Repairs have been scheduled.
As a result, a portion of Hamilton Road between Ward Street and Peter Street remains closed to traffic until repairs are completed.
Police have not reported any injuries and say the investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information is asked to contact the Port Hope Police Service at 905-885-8123. In an emergency, residents should call 911.
