YMCA Northumberland is celebrating the successful launch of its new Age Well program, an initiative designed to help older adults stay active, socially connected and engaged in their communities.
The program officially began with a free Shuffle & Shine Dance Night held June 19 at the Campbellford YMCA inside the Sunny Life Recreation and Wellness Centre.
The event brought together adults aged 55 and older for an evening of music, dancing, refreshments and socializing. Participants had an opportunity to reconnect with friends, meet new people and enjoy an active community gathering at no cost.
A highlight of the evening was a line dancing session led by Joanne Beer and a team of volunteer dancers who introduced participants to a variety of dance steps and routines.
YMCA Northumberland says the Age Well program was developed in response to feedback from older adults in rural communities who identified social connection and accessible recreational opportunities as important factors in aging well.
Thanks to funding from the Community Foundation of Campbellford/Seymour and Northumberland, the program will offer free monthly social dances and activities over the next 10 months for adults aged 55 and older.
The initiative is designed to promote physical health, mental well-being and social inclusion while creating opportunities for seniors to build friendships and strengthen community connections.
YMCA Northumberland President and CEO Eunice Kirkpatrick says the foundation’s support is helping create meaningful opportunities for older adults to improve their well-being and enjoy a greater sense of belonging.
The YMCA also thanked volunteers, community partners and participants who helped make the launch event a success.
