Hamilton Township is moving to strengthen its planning and development services as it prepares for future growth across the municipality.
Among the changes is the assumption of subdivision approval authority from Northumberland County, allowing development applications to be reviewed and processed locally. Township officials say the move will improve coordination between departments while ensuring planning decisions are guided by local knowledge and community priorities.
Council has also begun a comprehensive review of the township’s Official Plan, the long-term document that guides decisions involving housing, agriculture, employment, transportation, infrastructure, parks and environmental protection.
Officials say the review will consider legislative changes, emerging development trends and local priorities, with opportunities for residents, businesses and community organizations to provide input throughout the process.
The township has also welcomed Marnie Saunders as its new Senior Planner. Officials say her experience managing complex development applications will strengthen the planning department while supporting a planned transition within the team.
Looking ahead, Hamilton Township has retained Watson & Associates to prepare a Growth Management Strategy that will examine the community’s long-term development needs.
The study will consider increasing development pressures within the township, including the potential impacts of the proposed OPG Wesleyville project, along with growth occurring in neighbouring Cobourg and Port Hope.
Township officials say the combined initiatives will help ensure Hamilton Township has the planning tools, expertise and policies needed to manage growth responsibly while preserving the rural character and qualities valued by residents.
