Cobourg police have charged a dentist with sexual assault following an investigation into an alleged incident at a local dental clinic.
The Cobourg Police Service says its Criminal Investigation Bureau launched an investigation on June 27 after receiving a report of an alleged sexual assault during a dental appointment at the Northumberland Dental Clinic.
As a result of the investigation, police arrested a 38-year-old Ajax man on July 6. He has been charged with sexual assault.
The accused was held for a bail hearing before being released to a surety with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing and believe there may be additional victims. Investigators are asking anyone with information, or anyone who believes they may have been affected, to contact the Cobourg Police Service at 905-372-6821. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
In its release, the Cobourg Police Service reminded the public that there is no statute of limitations for sexual offences, meaning allegations can be investigated and prosecuted regardless of when they occurred.
Police also note that sexual assault includes any non-consensual contact of a sexual nature and are encouraging anyone who has experienced sexual violence to come forward.
As with all criminal charges, the allegation has not been proven in court, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
