Motorists in Cobourg should prepare for traffic delays as construction begins next week on a series of traffic signal improvements at three key intersections.
According to a construction notice issued by the Town of Cobourg in partnership with Northumberland County, work is scheduled to begin during the week of Monday, July 13.
The project will start with the installation of new traffic signals at the intersection of D’Arcy Street and Elgin Street East, where construction is expected to take about eight weeks.
Crews will then move to install new traffic signals at D’Arcy Street and University Avenue East, while upgrades will also be completed to the existing traffic signals at Division Street and University Avenue.
The overall project is expected to continue until mid-November, weather permitting.
The work will include traffic signal installation and modifications, underground electrical work, streetlight improvements, curb and sidewalk reconstruction, minor asphalt restoration, pavement markings and other related improvements.
Residents and motorists can expect temporary lane restrictions throughout construction. The Town says vehicle and pedestrian access to adjacent properties will be maintained whenever possible, although temporary access restrictions may occasionally be required with advance notice.
Traffic control signage will be in place, and traffic signals may temporarily operate in flashing mode or be taken out of service during portions of the work. Police officers or certified traffic control personnel will assist with traffic management when required.
The contractor may also carry out utility locates and pre-construction building condition surveys before work begins.
The improvements include the long-awaited installation of traffic signals at D’Arcy Street and University Avenue, an intersection that has been the focus of community discussion over traffic safety in recent years.
