With nominations continuing for the October 26 municipal election, the races in Cobourg and Port Hope are beginning to take shape, although several familiar names have yet to officially enter.
In Cobourg, Nicole Beatty remains the only officially nominated candidate for mayor, while Adam Bureau is currently the lone candidate for deputy mayor. Ten candidates have also filed nomination papers for the Town’s five at-large council seats: Aaron Burchat, Randy Curtis, Alexander Cahill, Randy Barber, Joel Scott, Cindy Beman, Miriam Mutton, Brian Darling, Johnny Percolides, and Mark Mills.
Notably absent from the official list is incumbent Mayor Lucas Cleveland, despite publicly stating he intends to seek re-election. Cleveland has yet to officially file his nomination papers.
In Port Hope, Angela Grogan and Todd Attridge have both entered the mayoral race. Incumbent Mayor Olena Hankivsky has not yet indicated whether she intends to seek another term, and no nomination has been filed in her name.
Council races are also beginning to develop. Four candidates have filed for the municipality’s four urban Ward 1 seats: Claire Holloway Wadhwani, Norm Orviss, Miranda Lukaniuk, and Les Andrews.
Meanwhile, in Ward 2, Jamie Ferguson is currently the only candidate seeking election to the municipality’s two rural council seats.
Candidates in both municipalities have until Friday, August 21, at 2 p.m. to submit nomination papers. Certified candidate lists will be released on August 24, ahead of voting, which begins in mid-October and concludes on Election Day, October 26.
