The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding residents that jumping from bridges into rivers, lakes and other waterways can have devastating consequences.
As people spend more time outdoors during the summer months, the OPP says what may appear to be a safe place to enter the water often hides serious dangers beneath the surface.
Police warn that the height of a bridge alone can result in severe injuries when a person hits the water. Hidden hazards such as shallow water, rocks, submerged debris and strong currents can make the situation even more dangerous.
The risks increase further when boats are operating nearby. The OPP says vessel operators may not see someone jump into the water in time to avoid a collision, placing both the individual and others at risk.
Officials also note that incidents involving bridge jumping can endanger emergency responders who may be called upon to conduct rescues in hazardous conditions.
The OPP is urging residents to stay off bridge railings and structures and never enter the water by jumping from a bridge, regardless of whether warning signs are posted. Police stress that the absence of signage does not mean a location is safe.
Instead, the OPP encourages people to wear a properly fitted lifejacket, use designated swimming areas and make responsible choices around Ontario’s waterways to help prevent avoidable injuries and fatalities this summer.
