For the past century, the Royal Canadian Legion has supported veterans, strengthened communities and created places where Canadians can gather in fellowship.
This weekend, Cobourg Legion Branch 133 is marking the Legion’s 100th anniversary with three days of celebrations designed to honour its history while inviting residents to discover everything the branch continues to offer today.
The festivities begin Friday with a flag raising ceremony, followed by a performance by The Mudmen featuring special guests the Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums. Saturday’s open house includes a barbecue, anniversary cake cutting, military displays and live entertainment, while the weekend concludes Sunday afternoon with local band Sweetgrass.
Cobourg Legion Branch 133 President Janet Kyle says organizers hope residents will stop in, celebrate the centennial and learn more about the branch.
The anniversary also comes as the Royal Canadian Legion is offering free memberships for the remainder of 2026, giving prospective members an opportunity to experience the organization before renewing in 2027. Kyle says the Cobourg branch continues to focus on supporting veterans through initiatives including twice-monthly veterans’ coffee mornings, while providing a welcoming place for members to connect.
Beyond supporting veterans, the Cobourg Legion continues to invest in the wider community. Through fundraising, the branch provides support for youth sports, high school bursaries, seniors’ programs and a variety of local non-profit organizations.
The Cobourg Legion Branch 133 100th Anniversary Celebration runs Friday through Sunday, with most events open to the public.
