David Stambrook says he is ending his campaign for Mayor of Port Hope, citing personal reasons.
In a statement released Tuesday, Stambrook said the decision was difficult, but that it is the right one for himself and his family.
Stambrook’s name will remain on the ballot because the deadline to withdraw a municipal election nomination has passed. Under Ontario’s municipal election rules, candidates had until 2 p.m. on August 21 to withdraw their nominations.
Stambrook said he will no longer actively seek election as mayor.
He thanked supporters and residents who had engaged with him during the campaign, saying he entered the race because he cares deeply about Port Hope and its future.
The Municipality of Port Hope’s certified list originally included Stambrook among five candidates for mayor: Todd Attridge, Angela Grogan, Olena Hankivsky, David Stambrook and Ian West.
Port Hope’s municipal election voting period runs from October 16 at 10 a.m. through October 26 at 8 p.m. Voting is available online or by telephone.
