The Toronto Blue Jays will not be returning to the postseason in 2026.
Toronto was eliminated from playoff contention Wednesday with a 4-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Blue Jays entered the day with only a slim path to the playoffs, needing to win their remaining games while also getting losses from the Chicago White Sox. Toronto’s loss ended that possibility.
Max Scherzer started for the Blue Jays, striking out seven batters and allowing four earned runs over five innings. Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning for Baltimore.
The result ends a disappointing follow-up to a 2025 season in which Toronto came within one victory of winning the World Series.
The Blue Jays still have four games remaining on their schedule, including the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against Baltimore.
Toronto will then have Thursday off before closing out the regular season with a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Rogers Centre.
The Blue Jays entered Wednesday with a 77-80 record, while Baltimore improved to 77-81 with the victory.
