Cobourg will lose a downtown parking lot this fall after the town and property owner failed to reach an agreement on a new lease for the site at 202 Second St., across from the Market Building.
Council was told Wednesday that the town has leased the privately owned property for parking for several years. Legislative Clerk Brent Larmer said the current owner, Balder Corporation, sought a higher rental rate, but rejected the town’s counter-offer.
Coun. Brian Darling asked whether Balder could operate the parking lot itself. Director of Development Services Chris Challenger said it could, but the company would have to meet municipal requirements, including a pre-consultation meeting, submitting a proposed layout and complying with site plan control.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland also confirmed Balder is the same developer appealing to the Ontario Land Tribunal over its proposed eight-storey development at the property. The parking lot is scheduled to close Nov. 14.
