Cobourg council has endorsed the Northumberland Soccer Club’s proposed $11.5-million multi-use fieldhouse at the Lions Fields, but officials say several questions remain about the project.
The club is seeking a provincial infrastructure grant that could cover up to half of eligible costs. The proposed four-season facility would include an air-supported dome, artificial turf, clubhouse, change rooms and walking track, supporting soccer and other sports.
Town staff raised concerns about operating costs, parking and the concentration of recreation facilities around the Cobourg Community Centre. The site is also being considered for other projects involving the YMCA, pickleball club and skateboard community.
The soccer club says fundraising would be needed for capital costs, while its analysis indicates the dome could cover its operating expenses. The club must submit its grant application by Dec. 22 and requires council support for the Lions Fields site.
