The Cobourg Cougars picked up a point Thursday night but came up just short in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Markham Royals.
Andrew Pacheco scored the winner 4:18 into overtime, ending a back-and-forth game that saw Cobourg outshoot Markham 44-25.
The Cougars trailed 1-0 after the opening period before the offence came alive in the second.
Briir Long tied the game with his fourth goal of the season on the power play before Carter Petrie gave Cobourg a 2-1 advantage.
Markham answered with two goals just 25 seconds apart to retake the lead, but Jayson Synnott responded 33 seconds later with his first goal of the season to send the teams into the third tied at three.
Noah Szczurek restored Markham’s lead at 8:06 of the third before Colton Bain tied it at four with just under four minutes remaining. Long and Cayden Smith picked up the assists.
Cobourg was called for too many men one minute into overtime, but the Cougars killed off the penalty before Pacheco eventually ended the game.
Smith finished with three assists for Cobourg, while Long had a goal and an assist.
Cougars goaltender Carter Nadon stopped 20 of the 25 shots he faced as Cobourg earned a point in the overtime loss.
