Families and runners will gather at YMCA Northumberland on Thanksgiving Monday for the annual Turkey Trot, a community event supporting the YMCA Strong Communities Campaign.
Rod Simpson is the self-professed “Head Turkey” for this year’s event once again. The event started out as a small gathering but has grown into one of the biggest Thanksgiving events in the region every year.
The Oct. 12 event begins with check-in at 8:30 a.m. at the YMCA at 339 Elgin St. W. The morning includes activities for all ages, with a free Gobble Wobble for children four and under, followed by a one-kilometre kids’ fun run.
The timed Gobbler 2.5K run and walk and Gobbler 5K are scheduled to begin at 10:10 a.m. The 5K consists of two loops of the 2.5K course through the Cobourg Conservation Area. Simpson says there is a distance to suit just about everyone, all in a truly beautiful setting.
Organizers say the event sold out last year and have encouraged participants to register early. More than 400 people were listed as registered for this year’s event.
Participants can also take part in a virtual, choose-your-own-adventure version of the Turkey Trot.
The Thanksgiving-themed event will include prizes and awards, including the Golden Drumstick for the best turkey spirit or costume. Simpson explains the criteria for a possible win of this coveted — and squeaky — prize!
Money raised supports the YMCA Strong Communities Campaign, which helps reduce financial barriers to YMCA programs and services for people in the community.
The YMCA says race times are approximate, and participants should expect uneven, grassy terrain and rolling hills along the course.
For participants 18 and under, the cost is $10, and adults are $30. There are 115 draw prizes to give away, so you likely won’t come away empty-handed. You can register at NorthumberlandTurkeyTrot.org.
