The Port Hope Police Service is investigating whether local information was affected by a cybersecurity incident involving the third-party platform used by Crime Stoppers organizations across Canada and the United States.
In a statement issued Monday, Oct. 26, police said the incident raises concerns about the confidentiality of tips, the safety of informants and public confidence in the program.
The service said it is working with Crime Stoppers partners to determine the potential impact on public safety and ongoing investigations.
Police stressed the incident has not been characterized as a breach of police-owned internal systems.
Chief of Police said protecting the community and those who provide information remains a priority, adding the service will share verified details as they become available.
The statement did not indicate whether Port Hope police would suspend the use of Crime Stoppers while the investigation continues.
